Photo Ideas for Microstock Photographers – Go Shopping for Them!

By marke | Mar 24, 2009

Running out of ideas for you submissions to Microstock Photography can be a real headache. What you have to remember it that subjects for your photography are all around you. I must admit if I am not shooting images for a specific niche then my mind begins to wander and I end up shooting nothing. Here’s one idea to keep you in subjects for quite a while.

What’s the first thing you do when you come home from a shopping trip? The next question is, and I want you to remember that you are a Photographer shooting for the Microstock Photography Market, what should you be doing when you come home from a shopping trip?

You got it… You should be photographing the goods that you have just bought. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been shopping for your weekly groceries or that you have been out to buy the latest flat screen TV. Any items that you buy have at least one thing in common… If you photograph the items they can be submitted to the Microstock Photography market.

Branded items unfortunately cannot be submitted unless you can remove the name and logo etc in Photoshop. But on something like a Flat Screen TV it is quite easy to air brush out the logo and name. I usually make certain by reversing the image as well just to make the item unrecognisable from the position of the controls etc.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are a very popular subject and the libraries are full of images of them. However, there is always room for a creative approach to the subject. Even if it means doing something like copying and pasting a Red Pepper onto the screen of you new TV (Hey I’m talking Photoshop here!). You could even try creating textures and patterns to be used as backgrounds. Remember to fill the whole screen with the subject though.

It’s not just grocery shopping either, stationery, office and business related items always sell well. I usually isolate the images on a white background by shooting them in a Photo Soft box. These can now be bought on eBay for less than £10. If you are going to shoot a lot of product and pack type shots they are well worth the investment.

Search through the libraries and see what other photographers are shooting and you’ll be amazed at the subjects of some of the most popular images. There’s no excuse for the bad weather or you that you have no items to photograph. When my wife read this article she thought that she was doing me a favour dragging me out for the weekly shopping.

So the next time your arms a aching from carrying the weekly groceries, when you get home take a break, get your breath back and then get creative. This is one way to build your portfolio and earn an income from Microstock Photography!
